Oklahoma just started a lottery a few weeks ago and this week joined
20+ other states in a power-ball lottery. Many people seem to enjoy
gambling and it does seem to be the gambling element of the games
that attracts people. Bingo has virtually disappeared from the scene
since casino-style gaming began so I guess all the "I love bingo"
paraphernalia is in the closet as well. It must not have been bingo that
they loved after all. Surely the lottery itself as a game is not appealing
to anyone. They do sell home bingo games, but I have never seen a
home lottery game.
I think people are looking for a way to be well-provisioned to the point
of eliminating worry. They also want to participate in the life-style that
is paraded before us constantly not as the only good life but the only
real life. That life-style is only available to those with the key, and the
key is money. Those without money are condemned to a life
consisting only of a constant struggle to obtain the key to enter life and
pretending to have it by participating in our voracious credit system
and the various activities set up to emulate the rich and famous. And
of course watching real life go by - watching, watching, watching.
But, its all wrong. God promises those who will come to Him through
Christ constant adequate provision in this life for all situations. The
odds are 1 in 1. What are the odds in power-ball? God also promises
real life to those who trust Christ's provision for their sin-guilt. In the
end, the promise of life that the world holds out turns out to be just one
more way to be dead.
People are so evil that they prefer death to life if life must come from
God and through Christ. They'll do anything to try to find life another
way. They'll play the million to one odds and turn away from the 100%
effectiveness of the cross of Christ. Vegas would have surely taken
the bet that Christ was through when they laid Him in the tomb. On
