Jesus seemed to think we should have an urgency about
some things in life. There are many things that seem urgent,
but if we give them the urgency they seem to deserve we will
not be able to also prioritize the tasks Jesus indicated were
most deserving of our primary attention. The point is that we
are going to have to focus. There is absolutely no way we can
accept Jesus' agenda and also live what is currently seen as a
normal life. In other words, those who take up the path of
Jesus will not only appear to be peculiar, they will appear so
because they will be peculiar.
Focus on what? Focus on Jesus. That is the key to
everything. If you are distracted constantly by anything to the
point that your main focus is not Jesus then you are not going
to have the urgency that He said we should have nor will the
sense of urgency that you do have be rightly grounded. And
almost everyone has a sense of urgency about something - or
more likely just a diffuse sense of urgency that hangs on day
after day. We need to focus.
I never really thought getting 'centered' was a Christian
concept or that it was anything Christians should be trying to
bring into their lives. I think now that maybe it depends on
exactly what we mean by the term. We should be centered if
by that we mean focusing on Jesus so that we come into His
presence and if we mean moving other things to the
periphery.
How? I don't think mystical meditation is the answer. I think
prayer is the place to start. Admit freely to Jesus what is at
the center now. Tell Him if you don't really want to replace it
with Him, but you know you should want that. Ask Him to give
you right desires so that you can ask Him to be where you will
then want Him to be - in the center of everything so that you
are centered in Him and His urgency becomes yours. There is
peace in that urgency and joy, too. You will be a real oddity in
this world, though.
