What would it take to make you fell completely safe and secure? People
are installing all kinds of alarms on everything from their homes to cars.
People are spending billions trying to win millions in lotteries. People are
spending even more billions trying to maintain optimum health. People
spend hours reading books by those labeled (by some 'they' or other) as
experts who can help them solve some problem or all problems. I have
seen the most unexpected people reading the Dali Lama's latest work.
I think most of us are beset with insecurities of every kind and do the best
we can to make ourselves feel better about it. How we rely on the odds!
Only a few are actually the victims of crime, terminal illness, bankruptcy, or
social abandonment. But, we do know it COULD be us. And it could be
today or tomorrow!
As Christians, if the thought of having some large sum makes us think we
would feel better, or if we believe following any kind of prescription might
lead to a truly better life we need to stop and figure out why that would be
so. As people who are trusting our eternal destiny with Jesus Christ, it
should give us pause that we do not trust Him more with much lesser
threats than Hell.
We are to live by faith but will Jesus find faith when He returns? Maybe not
much. Fear is lack of faith, worry is lack of faith, and trusting anything even
in addition to Christ is lack of faith. Need I add that lack of faith is sin?
Christians needn't even fear failure for how can we fail who have so great a
savior who is sure to complete the work that He started in us.
He is sure while every other thing named in this essay is only a mere
possibility. He is eternal while every other thing named here is temporary if
present at all. He is perfect while every other thing is flawed. What more
could we ask? Why do we feel the need to somehow supplement that which
is perfect?
