Faith is the key to the Christian life. Faith in Jesus alone. The kind of
faith that we cannot achieve, earn, or learn. Faith is received from God
- this too is a gift. The kind of faith that depends on our own ability to
believe is not the faith that Jesus talked about, that faith revealed by
Jesus is rather a complete trust in Jesus Himself. Trusting Him even to
provide the necessary faith and trust. We trust that it is Christ at work
that brings about good and not our belief at work. We say to Jesus,
"Help our unbelief". And we trust that He will do exactly that.
This frees us in many ways. It is only our responsibility to cast our
cares (and ourselves) on the Lord. That is something even a depraved
man can do - it is not a virtuous act to fling oneself from a burning
building. So it is in our daily life. We go forward, decide, and act the
best we can but we trust Jesus that we will go as He desires. We know
all we can know but it is never very much. We look to understand in
the revealed word and whatever other communication we have with
God, but it is never completely clear. So, we trust. We trust Jesus.
The living Jesus; the present Jesus who is the Jesus who leads us and
empowers us to obey and in turn manifests Himself to us and comes
with His Father to make His dwelling with us.
The Word is enough for us to recognize Him and turn aside from
counterfeits because the Holy Spirit provides us with that - and again,
we trust Him to do so. We do not dare trust our own logic, intellect,
scholarship, or anything else but Him. He is the sure guide that makes
the Word our sure guide.
Trust Jesus because He is completely trustworthy - no other person,
no other thing.
