Why do we have to pray? If God already knows our needs, not to mention He knows
what we're going to ask AND how He is or is not going to answer, why does He want us
to pray? It really is a good question though our tendency is to brush it aside with some
platitudinal insight.
You've heard a lot of the possible answers to this question. I've actually seen some good
ones over the years and I think they were correct. I don't have any great insight into it
myself beyond what I've heard from others. Most of the good ones were understandable
but difficult to restate in your own words. Sort of like Edwards' explanation of the
Trinity, makes sense when your reading it (barely) but when you put the book down its
gone like a dream.
Here's the point. God wants us to pray. Did anyone ever get an explanation as to exactly
why those particular steps - marching, trumpeting, shouting - were required to bring down
the walls of Jericho? Nope. Haven't ever even heard a very good theory on that one.
But it worked. And, God works through prayer. I've seen Him do it over and over and I
don't think we even do it very well or with very much dedication. Now, what would God
do if we got serious about prayer - I mean really serious?
