9-28 POST

What's wrong with the church today?  How many sermons have explained to us just
exactly what it is that is wrong with the church today?  I've used the phrase myself
countless times, and that's all well and good, except for one thing.  Every time we say
we're going to tell you what's wrong with the church today we say it's something
different.  Maybe you'd noticed that.  Well, out of those many options, then, what IS
wrong with the church today?  Maybe nothing is wrong with the church today.  The
main problem with that is that it just won't preach.  That and maybe it doesn't square
with what you see in the church.
Maybe we're just not looking at it right.  What if the church is just fine, and I should
change that phrase to "What's wrong with ME today?"  There are, after all, many
promises about the church that are still in effect, such as, "The gates of  Hell will not
prevail against it" to mention only one.   That being the case, why are we always trying
to figure out what's wrong with it?  We need to realize "it" is "us".   And the problem
with us is... we refuse to recognize there is a problem with us.  Jesus Christ is the head
of the church...period.  So, if someone else (singular or plural) is the head of a particular
organization, even if it calls itself a church, it's not the church.  And therein is my final
answer to what's wrong with the church.   There's nothing wrong with the church, but
there is a whole lot wrong with a lot of organizations that are called 'church'.  Maybe
they should recognize Jesus as the head.  But, then, there go half my sermons for the
year.
