Jesus often said things that, if we took them seriously, should either change our lives
completely or drive us from any claim to Christianity.   If we took them seriously.  Just
consider a couple of examples.   One of the best known and surely among the most
ignored commandments of any deity by people claiming to be followers is the command
to love your enemies.  And, what about turning the other cheek?
No one really expects anyone else to follow those orders, much less does anyone expect
to follow them.  That's what people say, but if that is true why did Jesus say them at all?
Couldn't he have made whatever point he is making with a parable?
And what about some of the other things Jesus said that no one seems to take seriously.
Don't be afraid.  My peace I leave with you... that passes all understanding.  Anyone
think that is supposed to be the way we really experience life?
If we do believe these and all the other extraordinary things Jesus said why do so few
people seem to live accordingly?  And, on the other hand, if we hear what Jesus said
and we cannot take it seriously, why are we holding on to the title of Christian?  I think it
is time we take a much closer look at what our Lord said and act as though the person
who said it is indeed Lord or start calling ourselves by another na
me.
