Taste and see that the Lord is good.  We've been hearing about how good the
Lord is for all these years.  We've been thinking that He must be just that good -
some of us at least hoping that He is indeed so good.  We read it.  We sing it.
We might even occasionally shout about it or some might laugh about the
goodness of God.
How about tasting, though?  Some are concerned that experiences, like
feelings, are dangerous.  Sure they can be dangerous, but cannot faith itself be
dangerous when wrongly placed?  Experience is not the enemy of faith, it is the
fuel of faith.  Hear about my wife's Red Velvet Cake and, depending on the
source, you might believe it is tasty.  Try it for yourself and the next time it
comes up, even though not right then enjoying the experience, how different will
your belief about that glorious flavor be?  Much different, I think.
Experience does not bring salvation - faith does that.  Feelings don't determine
our salvation on a given day - God's own faithfulness does that.  But, in our
personal experience of the beauty of Christ, the glory of the cross, the presence
of the Holy Spirit in our meditations on His word, that very goodness of God and
His eternal faithfulness, in those things and all that goes with them, we find the
abundant life.  We find the faith that drives fervent prayer.  We find that the Lord
is indeed just that good.  In fact, we will never experience all the flavor of that
goodness in this life but when we get those glorified taste buds we will have an
eternity to experience more and more as we discover that God is infinitely good.
