There has been quite a lot of intense discussion this year about Christmas.
Should everyone say, "Merry Christmas"?  Should every church meet on
Christmas day?  Good questions, I guess, but surely the degree of emotion is a
little much considering the more important questions that could be asked.

I could ask myself, for instance, why do I get so upset with others when their
actions don't measure up to my Christian standards and I do not get nearly so
upset when I fail to meet those same standards?  They may not even claim to be
a Christian, but I do.

I could ask myself as well about the amazing coincidence involved in that I get
upset about the very same things that are constantly discussed in the media.
They knew about all those same churches I knew about that won't be meeting
Christmas Sunday!  Hmm.  How did I know about those churches?

I could ask myself if the real meaning of Christmas is to point out everyone who
is failing to grasp the real meaning of Christmas.  I used to think the real meaning
of Christmas was to buy my wife and kids enough great stuff that they would
buy me some equally great stuff.   Now I see how I missed it.  It doesn't seem like
quite as much fun as the giving and getting.  But, then, it's always less fun when
you have to move to a higher spiritual plane!
