My wife and I have a very good friend who is quite close to us. Close
enough to occasionally question her regarding her chosen apparel for
church attendance. Usually the questionable attire is some type of pants. I
realize many people are uncomfortable with the idea of women wearing
pants to church and I know their Biblical rationale. I think their
interpretation is very weak on this issue, but if we attend a church about
which we are not sure Dana will always wear a dress. We have no desire
to offend anyone unnecessarily.
I wonder, though, why he always asks, "Are you going to wear THAT to
church?", but never asks her if she's going to church with money in her
pocket that belongs to her. After all, Jesus said if we want to be His
disciples we need to get rid of all of that stuff. Are you accusing me of my
own weak interpretation? Maybe it is weak, but I'm not so sure the literal
sense is always so wooden as we'd like. Our friend also never asks if
Dana is sure she has made adequate preparation to come into the
presence of God. Of course, we're probably in no greater danger of that
happening than he is in his own church and we all assume the putting on of
the pants -or dress- IS our reasonable preparation.
And we never hear, "Are you going to church with so much love for God in
your heart that, in comparison to that love you hate those to whom you are
closest?". Well, why ask that? We surely have no reason to ask that of
someone who'd wear pants to church do we?
